Last, but not really least, I give you my years most enjoyed films. As with every other list, this is just films that I saw for the first time this year, not necessarily this years best films.
3) Mr Popper's Penguins
On the plane to the US a few weeks ago my partner was laughing so hard I couldn't concentrate. I look over and she's watching a man dancing with penguins. Jim Carey is unpredictable, sometimes he's brilliant and sometimes he's Ace Ventura. Mr Popper is the stereotypical inattentive father who unexpectedly receives the gift of penguins and learns all those things people get to learn when a film tells them to sort out their priorities. I know this film is stupid, and ridiculous, and very very clichéd but it was also very funny. Oh, Penguins!
2) Shutter Island
Another excellent performance by Di Caprio, and another total mind-fuck. I watched this film twice and each time it was a totally different experience. To make a film with a twist like this that actually improves the film for it's second watching. Set in the insane asylum hidden off the coast on Shutter Island, the story follows US Marshall Teddy Daniels as he searches for a missing patient and tries to hold back his troubled past. But don't let that put you off, it will be a shock when the story catches up with you.
1) Troll Hunter
I hate this whole vampire bullshit. Twilight? It's so awful I don't know how to move on after just reading a review. But enough wallowing, you know what the new Vampire is? Trolls! This Norwegian language film follows a student film crew as they investigate mysterious deaths of bears in the countryside. After stalking a poacher they realise that they've bitten off more than they can chew. Also: TROOOOOOLL!!!
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holidays, or whatever else you like to celebrate over the winter period.
Stay warm and stay happy.

I agree with you - Troll Hunter is very likely the best film I've seen all year. (You've read BadRep's review of it, right?)
Now I've read your review of Shutter Island, I'll really have to see it. I wanted to catch it at the cinema but didn't manage to, and hadn't really read any terribly persuasive reviews either way. But how could it be bad? It has Leonardo diCaprio in it! (I'm so glad he survived being a teen heartthrob. That man can act.) Thanks!
I loved Shutter Island, but mostly because that man diCaprio has some serious talent (thank deity, I didn't know if he'd survive being a heart-throb)
And BadRep were completely on form with that review - Troll Hunter is the best film about fantastical creatures I think I've ever watched. It reminded me of District 9, oddly.
